Accelerated Reader
In this reading program, students answer questions about books they’ve read using the computer lab. Points are earned for correct answers, and incentives encourage students to reach monthly goals. Volunteers are needed to help administer testing in the computer lab before classes begin (8:30-9:00am), during the day (see Story Reading), or after school (see After School). Additional volunteers may also be needed to help manage the testing database, publicize incentives, or administer rewards.
After School
Various after-school programs will be offered throughout the school year that supplement math, reading, and science curriculums. Volunteers are needed to help facilitate programs as they are organized.
Book Fair
Large selections of popular children’s books are displayed in the school library for a week in February to provide book-purchasing opportunities for students and families.
Volunteers are needed to set up book displays prior to the Book Fair Week, assist students during the book sale, and to cashier.
Classroom Parties
Help celebrate Valentines Day and Halloween with your child’s classroom! Volunteers are needed to assist serve refreshments in parties.
Elf Express
This three-day event involves the purchase and display of a wide assortment of gift items at the school shortly after Thanksgiving Break. During the Express, students may independently holiday shop for family members and friends. Volunteers are needed to assist student shoppers and to cashier.
Fall Fun Night
Games, activities, and contests are organized to celebrate autumn. This is one of the largest events conducted at Parkside. Volunteers are needed to help plan, organize, and prepare materials well in advance of this event night. Volunteers are needed for setup, game operation, and refreshment sales. Cleanup is yet another volunteer need for this mammoth undertaking!
Fun & Field Day
The name says it all! Various outside activity stations provide a day of outdoor fun to help usher in the return of warm weather. Many volunteers are needed to lead each activity station. Both morning and afternoon time slots need filled.
Hospitality
The Parkside PTA provides refreshments during events such as general PTA meetings, Grandparents Day, and other special gatherings to welcome family, guests, and members. Volunteers are needed periodically to help prepare and serve refreshments.
Library
How do all of those books get back on the shelves? Kim Beckman, our dedicated librarian knows all too well! Volunteers are welcome to help re-shelve books to make them readily available for the next young reader.
Movie Nights
Families gather to enjoy popular movie favorites that often inspire themed clothing, activities, and refreshments (BYOB [Bring Your Own Blanket!]). Volunteers are needed to suggest and possibly organize fun movies. Volunteers are also needed to sell refreshments, set-up, and clean up.
Parent Workshop
This weekly workshop provides help directly to our teachers by performing copying, collating, stapling, cutting, or designing to prepare for upcoming classroom lessons. Volunteers are needed for about one hour/week (day/time to be arranged).
Story Reading
You can read a story to your child’s classroom! Story readers may also read books to small groups of non-readers to prepare for AR testing. Volunteers are always welcome!
Teacher Appreciation
A luncheon is provided for teachers, faculty, and staff to express our deepest thanks for all they do for our children. Volunteers are needed to decorate, provide food, serve food, and clean up.
Teacher’s Lounge
Snacks, beverages, and assorted supplies are maintained in the lounge to ensure our teachers have the resources for their well-deserved breaks. Volunteers are periodically needed to shop for items to replenish the lounge inventory.
